Your October 2026 Weekend Guide Around Portofino: Harvest Festival, State Fair & Fall Fun

October is Clayton NC's festival month, and from the gates of Portofino nearly all of it is minutes away. The 75th annual Harvest Festival, the NC State Fair in Raleigh, Halloween events downtown, and the Saturday farm market fill the calendar through the end of the month. Here is your weekend-by-weekend guide to October 2026 around Portofino and 297 Bonaventure Dr.

The 75th Annual Clayton Harvest Festival, October 22-25

The signature event of the season returns to Main Street in downtown Clayton for its 75th annual edition, October 22 through 25, 2026. The four-day festival brings carnival rides and midway games, live entertainment, the Squealin' on the Square BBQ competition, a Latin American Festival, classic car and tractor shows, food trucks, craft beer, and a vendor fair on Saturday, October 24 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It draws tens of thousands of visitors, and for Portofino residents it is a short drive with none of the parking hassle of a big-city fair.

The festival also makes a great reason to invite out-of-town guests: they get a weekend of small-town festival energy, then return to a quiet gated community with a screened porch and a half-acre backyard at 297 Bonaventure Dr.

The NC State Fair, October 15-25

The NC State Fair runs October 15 through 25, 2026 at the fairgrounds on Blue Ridge Road in Raleigh, about 25 miles from Clayton. Rides, fair food, livestock shows, live music, and nightly fireworks make it the state's biggest annual event, and it is an easy day trip from Portofino. For a full planning guide, see our NC State Fair day-trip post.

Halloween Season in Clayton

Clayton keeps Halloween family-friendly and spread across the whole month:

  • Boo Bash on Friday, October 23 at the Clayton Community Center is an inclusive Halloween dance with games, music, and dancing hosted by Clayton Parks and Recreation for individuals with developmental and physical disabilities and their families.
  • Main Street Trick-or-Treat on Friday, October 30 brings safe trick-or-treating along Main Street for preschool-aged children and families, ending in Town Square with games and activities.

Every Saturday: The Clayton Farm Market

The Clayton Farm Market runs Saturday mornings at Horne Square in downtown Clayton through the fall, with local produce, baked goods, crafts, and live music. It is a low-key weekly ritual that pairs well with coffee on Main Street, and it is one of the reasons the downtown social district has become a favorite for Portofino residents. Our farmers market guide covers the full Johnston County scene.

Why October Is the Best Month to Tour Portofino

Fall color arrives on the wooded lots and equestrian trails of Portofino in October, and the community's miles of hiking and nature trails are at their best in cool weather. The two pools and clubhouses anchor the resort-style lifestyle, while the screened-in back porch at 297 Bonaventure Dr becomes the season's favorite room: morning coffee with the leaves turning, evening drinks with the woods as the backdrop.

October is also a strong month to buy. Sellers who list now want to close by year end, and with the Harvest Festival and State Fair bringing visitors to town, the community is at its most inviting.
