Your Clayton NC Weekend, October 16-18: State Fair Opening Weekend, the Farm Market & a Screened-Porch Saturday

This is the first full weekend of the Triangle's fall rush, and all of it sits within easy reach of the Portofino gate. The NC State Fair opened Thursday in Raleigh and runs through October 25, the Clayton Farm and Community Market returns Saturday morning at Horne Square, and the 75th annual Clayton Harvest Festival is exactly one week out. For residents of 297 Bonaventure Dr, the weekend's choices range from a day trip up US 70 to a relaxed morning close to home, with a screened porch and a chef's kitchen waiting either way.

Friday night: the calm before the rush

With the fair now open and the festival approaching, Friday is the weekend's quietest night, and that is a feature, not a bug. The State Fair runs evening hours through opening weekend, but so does Portofino's own calendar: 7-plus miles of trails under changing leaves, the fishing pond, and the screened porch at 297 Bonaventure Dr made for the first cool evenings of the season. The half-acre wooded lot backs to mature trees, so the fall color starts right outside the back door. If you want a low-key kickoff, grill on the porch and save the crowds for Saturday.

Saturday: the NC State Fair or the farm market

The NC State Fair is in its opening weekend at the State Fairgrounds at 1025 Blue Ridge Road in Raleigh, about 25 miles from Clayton, with Saturday hours from 9 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. From the Portofino gate it is a straight shot up US 70 and I-40, roughly 35 to 40 minutes on a normal day, which makes the fair an easy day trip rather than a vacation. Our full State Fair day-trip guide covers parking, the best food stands, and how to fit the fair into a Clayton family's week.

If you would rather stay close, the Clayton Farm and Community Market runs Saturday, October 17 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Horne Square, with fall vegetables, local honey, baked goods, and seasonal plants from Johnston County growers. It is a 10-minute drive from the Portofino gate and an easy stop before or after a morning walk on the community trails. A Saturday haul moves easily into the chef's kitchen at 297 Bonaventure Dr, with its farmhouse sink, self-closing drawers, and under-cabinet lighting, for a seasonal supper that takes minutes.

Saturday evening and Sunday: pick your pace

Saturday evening, the fair's fireworks and midway are in full swing, and opening weekend is when the crowds are at their biggest. For a quieter finish, downtown Clayton is roughly a 10-minute drive down US 70 Business, and the holiday lights on Main Street start appearing as the festival nears. Sunday is the weekend's slowest day, which makes it ideal for early voting at either Clayton site: Oakland Presbyterian Church at 8927 Cleveland Road or The Church at Clayton Crossings at 11407 Clayton Boulevard, both open October 15 through 31. The full rundown is in our Clayton NC 2026 voter guide.

Why this weekend shows off Clayton

A weekend like this is the clearest argument for life at 297 Bonaventure Dr. You get the peace of a gated, wooded community with resort-style amenities, and then, minutes outside the gate, a small town with a genuinely active calendar: the fair in Raleigh, the farm market downtown, and the biggest festival in Johnston County, the 75th annual Harvest Festival, October 22-25. Admission and parking at the festival are free, and a free shuttle runs from The Church at Clayton Crossings on Saturday, October 24. For the full plan, see our Harvest Festival guide, and for Halloween season beyond it, our Halloween in Clayton guide covers Boo Bash on October 23 and Main Street Trick-or-Treat on October 30.
