Thursday, October 15 is the pivot day of the Triangle's fall calendar: the NC State Fair opens in Raleigh, Johnston County early voting starts for the November 3 election, and the 75th annual Clayton Harvest Festival is exactly one week behind it. For Portofino residents at 297 Bonaventure Dr, the two weeks that follow are the busiest stretch of the season, all of it within easy reach of the gate. Here is the Clayton NC plan for the fall rush.
The NC State Fair Opens October 15
The NC State Fair runs October 15 through 25 at the State Fairgrounds at 1025 Blue Ridge Road in Raleigh, about 25 miles from Clayton. Opening day runs from noon to 11 p.m.; Friday and Saturday hours are 9 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., and Sunday through Thursday it is 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. From the Portofino gate, it is a straight shot up US 70 and I-40, roughly 35 to 40 minutes on a normal day, which makes the fair an easy day trip rather than a vacation.
For first-timers, the practical advice is to go early in the week or on opening day, when the crowds are thinnest, and to buy tickets online to skip the gate line. Our full State Fair day-trip guide covers parking, the best food stands, and how to fit the fair into a Clayton family's week.
Early Voting Starts October 15
Johnston County early voting for the November 3 general election runs October 15 through October 31, with two Clayton sites: Oakland Presbyterian Church at 8927 Cleveland Road and The Church at Clayton Crossings at 11407 Clayton Boulevard. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., with Saturday hours on October 24 and October 31 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.; sites are closed Sundays.
Early voting is the easiest way to vote in Clayton: you can vote at either site regardless of precinct, and North Carolina offers same-day registration during the early voting window for anyone who missed the October 9 deadline. Both Clayton sites are a short drive down the US 70 corridor from Portofino, so it fits into a workday or a Saturday errand run. The full rundown, including what is on the ballot and the ID rules, is in our Clayton NC 2026 voter guide.
The Harvest Festival Countdown: October 22-25
One week after the fair opens, the 75th annual Clayton Harvest Festival takes over downtown Clayton from Thursday, October 22 through Sunday, October 25. Carnival midway, Squealin' on the Square barbecue, the Latin American Festival, a classic car and motorcycle show, and a vendor fair fill Main Street, Town Square, and Horne Square. Admission and parking are free, and a free shuttle runs from The Church at Clayton Crossings on Saturday, October 24.
From the Portofino gate, downtown Clayton is roughly a 10-minute drive down US 70 Business, close enough that festival-goers can come and go all weekend. Our complete Harvest Festival guide has the day-by-day plan, and the Halloween in Clayton guide covers Boo Bash on October 23 and Main Street Trick-or-Treat on October 30.
The Calm Weekend Before the Rush
Before all of that, this weekend is the quiet one: the Clayton Farm and Community Market runs Saturday, October 10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Horne Square, with fall vegetables, local honey, baked goods, and seasonal plants from Johnston County growers. It is a 10-minute drive from the Portofino gate and an easy stop before or after a morning walk on the community trails.
It is also the last relaxed weekend to enjoy Portofino's own amenities before the calendar fills up: 7-plus miles of trails under changing leaves, the pools on warm afternoons, the equestrian center minutes away, and the screened porch at 297 Bonaventure Dr made for October evenings. The half-acre wooded lot backs to mature trees, so the fall color starts right outside the back door.
Why This Stretch Shows Off Clayton
The two weeks from October 15 to October 31 are when Clayton NC is at its most visible: a state fair 40 minutes away, a county that makes voting easy, and a hometown festival that has run for 75 years. For anyone considering a move to Portofino, it is the best window of the year to visit: tour the community, catch the market, see the fair, and stand on Main Street during the Harvest Festival.
