This is the calm week before Clayton NC's busiest stretch of the year. Thursday, October 15 marks the pivot: the NC State Fair opens in Raleigh, Johnston County early voting starts for the November 3 election, and the 75th annual Clayton Harvest Festival is exactly one week behind it. For Portofino residents at 297 Bonaventure Dr, everything on this week's calendar is within easy reach of the gate. Here is your Clayton NC week ahead, October 13 through 19, 2026.
Thursday, October 15: The NC State Fair Opens
The NC State Fair runs October 15 through 25 at the State Fairgrounds at 1025 Blue Ridge Road in Raleigh, about 25 miles from Clayton. Opening day runs from noon to 11 p.m.; Friday and Saturday hours are 9 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., and Sunday through Thursday it is 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. From the Portofino gate it is a straight shot up US 70 and I-40, roughly 35 to 40 minutes on a normal day, which makes the fair an easy day trip. Go early in the week or on opening day, when the crowds are thinnest, and buy tickets online to skip the gate line. See our full State Fair day-trip guide for the details.
Thursday, October 15: Early Voting Starts
Johnston County early voting for the November 3 general election runs October 15 through October 31, with two Clayton sites: Oakland Presbyterian Church at 8927 Cleveland Road and The Church at Clayton Crossings at 11407 Clayton Boulevard. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., with Saturday hours on October 24 and October 31 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.; sites are closed Sundays. Early voting is the easiest way to vote in Clayton: you can vote at either site regardless of precinct, and North Carolina offers same-day registration during the early voting window for anyone who missed the October 9 deadline. See the full Clayton NC voter guide for what is on the ballot.
Saturday, October 17: Farm Market at Horne Square
The Clayton Farm and Community Market runs Saturday mornings at Horne Square in downtown Clayton, and October is prime season: fall vegetables, local honey, baked goods, and seasonal plants from Johnston County growers. It is about a 10-minute drive from the Portofino gate and an easy stop before or after a morning walk on the community trails. For a full rundown of October events, see our October 2026 events calendar.
Weekend Evenings: Clayton Fear Farm
Clayton Fear Farm runs multiple nights through October, including this weekend, with more than 10 haunted experiences and a haunted hayride. The Johnston County Visitors Bureau lists it as a seasonal staple for the area. It is a fun October outing for older kids and adults, and it is minutes from Portofino.
Dinner Before the Show: Downtown Clayton
If you are making an evening of it downtown, Main Street has real options within a few blocks of Town Square: Clayton Steakhouse at 307 E Main St, Mannings Restaurant at 406 E Main St, Aaktun Restaurant, Coffee and Tiki Bar at 401 E Main St, Primo Pizza at 226 E Main St, and Vinson's Pub and Eatery at 800 E Main St. All are a short drive from Portofino and make an easy dinner-and-show evening.
Mark Your Calendar: The Week After
- October 22-25: The 75th annual Clayton Harvest Festival takes over downtown. See the full Harvest Festival guide.
- October 23: Boo Bash at The Clayton Center.
- October 30: Main Street Trick-or-Treat in downtown Clayton.
- November 3: Election Day.
Why This Week Shows Off Portofino
This is the stretch of year when Portofino's lifestyle is easiest to see: 7-plus miles of trails under changing leaves, two pools still open for warm afternoons, the equestrian center minutes away, and the screened porch at 297 Bonaventure Dr made for October evenings. The home's half-acre wooded lot backs to mature trees, so the fall color starts right outside the back door.
If you are thinking about making Clayton home, this is a great week to visit: tour the community, catch the market, see the fair, and stand on Main Street before the Harvest Festival crowd arrives.
